SHMAYA AVNI

SHMAYA AVNI (b. February 13, 1923)
            He was born in Strimtere (Stramtura), Carpathian Russia.  His surname at birth was Shteynmets.  He studied in religious elementary school and in yeshivas.  From 1960 he was living in Israel.  From time to time he published stories, reportage pieces, and articles in Tsukunft (Future) in New York and Letste nayes (Latest news) in Tel Aviv.  One representative story of his appeared in Almanakh fun yidishe shrayber in yisroel (Annual of Yiddish writers in Israel) (Tel Aviv, 1962, 1967); and another in M. Ḥalamish’s Mikan umikarov (From near and far) (Merḥavya, 1966).  His main work has been in Hebrew and a small portion in Romanian.
